We compare today's date with your birthdate calendar-style: years = current year minus birth year, months = current month minus birth month, days = current day minus birth day. If the day count goes negative, we borrow the full length of the previous month (28, 29, 30, or 31 days); if the month count goes negative, we borrow 12 months from the years. That's why month lengths never throw the math off.
